Convert Excel to CSV Online Free – Quick and Simple Guide

Excel files are great for humans, but systems prefer CSV. Databases, CRMs, analytics tools — they all want plain, simple CSV files. Converting Excel to CSV strips away the formatting and leaves just the clean data that machines love.

When to Convert to CSV

  • Database imports: MySQL, PostgreSQL, and others import CSV natively
  • CRM uploads: Salesforce, HubSpot, and others accept CSV imports
  • Data analysis: Python, R, and analysis tools read CSV easily
  • API data transfers: Many APIs accept CSV-formatted data

How to Convert Excel to CSV

  1. Open the file converter
  2. Upload your Excel (.xlsx) file
  3. Select CSV as output format
  4. Choose delimiter (comma is the standard)
  5. Click "Convert"
  6. Download your CSV file

Important Notes

  • Formatting is lost: Colors, fonts, merged cells, and formulas disappear
  • Only active sheet: Convert sheets one at a time
  • Encoding matters: Use UTF-8 encoding for international characters

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose formatting when converting to CSV?

Yes. CSV is plain text, so bold, colors, formulas, and merged cells are stripped. Only the raw data values are kept.

What about multiple sheets?

CSV files can only hold one sheet. You will need to convert each sheet separately or choose the active sheet before converting.

What delimiter does the CSV use?

By default, comma. You can also choose semicolon or tab if needed for your target system.

Can I convert specific cells instead of the whole sheet?

No, the tool converts the entire active sheet. Clean up your data in Excel first before converting.
