Where GPA Points Actually Come From

GPA is a weighted average, which means credits are leverage. An A in a 4-credit science course contributes twice the points of an A in a 2-credit seminar — study time should follow the same ratio before finals week, not your favorite subject.

Weighting exists to reward rigor: Honors +0.5 and AP/IB +1.0 recognize that a B in AP Chemistry outranks an A in a regular elective. That is also why chasing a weighted 4.5+ with six APs while sleeping four hours backfires — unweighted GPA still anchors most admissions reads, and burnout tanks both. Balance the schedule, then let the solver tell you where each final stands.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each course grade converts to points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0, with plus/minus steps), multiplied by credit hours, summed, and divided by total credits. A 3-credit A (12 points) plus a 4-credit B (12 points) = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted caps at 4.0 for everyone. Weighted adds difficulty bumps — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB, capped at 5.0 — so rigorous schedules can exceed 4.0. Colleges often recalculate their own way, so report whichever your school uses.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. At 85% with a 90% target and a 25% final: (90 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25 = 105% — out of reach. The solver above runs this instantly and tells you when to adjust the target.

Does a final even matter that much?

It depends entirely on weight. A 10% final barely moves the needle; a 40% final can swing two letter grades. Plug your numbers into the solver before deciding how to allocate study time across classes.

How do I raise my cumulative GPA fastest?

Credits are leverage: a high grade in a 4-credit course moves cumulative GPA far more than a 1-credit lab. Retaking a failed high-credit course (where your school replaces the grade) is the single fastest repair.

What GPA do I need for grad school or scholarships?

Varies widely: many scholarships want 3.0+, competitive grad programs 3.5+, top law/med schools 3.7+. Use the cumulative blender above to see what term GPA you need across remaining credits to hit your number.

Is my grade data private here?

Completely. All math runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or tracked.

Can I use this for high school and college?

Yes — the 4.0 scale with Honors/AP weighting covers US high schools and most colleges. If your school uses a different scale (e.g. 100-point or 4.3+), convert grades first.
