Tipping Without the Awkward Math
US tipping runs on three numbers: 15% (adequate), 20% (standard), 25% (great). The mental shortcut for 20% — decimal left, double — covers most bills in two seconds: $86 becomes $8.60, doubled to $17.20. For 15%, take 10% and add half again.
Groups are where math dies: uneven orders, one person drinking, auto-gratuity hiding on the check. Rule of thumb — check for auto-gratuity first (parties of 6–8+), assign big-ticket individual items, split shared plates evenly, and let the splitter above end the negotiation. Planning the night's budget against real earnings? The paycheck calculator shows what actually funds it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip at a US restaurant?
15% for adequate service, 18–20% standard for table service, 20–25% for great service or large parties. Bars: $1–2 per drink. Delivery: 15–20% with a $3–5 minimum. Fast-casual counter with tip screen: 0–10% is fine.
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Tradition says pre-tax; most people tip on the post-tax total out of convenience. On a $100 bill at 8% tax, the difference at 20% is $1.60 — not worth a debate. This calculator tips on the after-tax subtotal.
How do you split a bill evenly?
Add tax, apply the tip percentage, divide by headcount — the splitter above does all three and shows food, tax, tip, and total per person. For uneven orders (steak vs salad), split shared items evenly and assign individual items instead.
What is 20% on common bills?
Move the decimal left and double: $50 → $10, $86 → $17.20, $120 → $24. Or use the presets above — 15/18/20/22/25% one tap, custom slider for anything else.
Should I tip on alcohol and happy-hour discounts?
Tip on what the full-price total would be — the server did the same work. Same logic for coupons and gift cards: tip the pre-discount amount.
Do large parties get auto-gratuity?
Often: parties of 6–8+ commonly see 18–20% added automatically. Check the bill before adding more — double-tipping is the most common group-dining overpay.
Is this tip calculator private?
Completely. All math runs locally in your browser — no bill amounts are uploaded, stored, or tracked.
What about tipping outside restaurants?
Haircuts 15–20%, rideshare 10–20%, hotel housekeeping $2–5/night, coffee shops optional. When in doubt, 20% for personal services keeps you safely generous.
