What is X% of Y?

Tips, taxes, commissions, rainy-day math.

Answer

17.2

20% of 86 = 17.2

Formula: (percentage ÷ 100) × number.

The Three Percent Traps (and How to Dodge Them)

Trap 1: asymmetry. Up 50% then down 50% does not return you home — $100 → $150 → $75. Gains and losses need different percentages to cancel, which is why investments must gain ~100% to recover a 50% loss.

Trap 2: stacking. Two discounts multiply; they never add. “Extra 10% off sale prices” on a 20%-off tag is 28% off total. Stores count on the 30% misread.

Trap 3: the base switch. “20% bigger” and “20% smaller” reference different bases. A $50 bill rising to $75 is +50%; falling back is −33.3%. Always ask: percent of what? Restaurant totals layer this twice (tax, then tip) — the tip calculator handles the stack, and the paycheck calculator shows what percent of salary tax takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a percentage?

Three core forms: X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y; X is what % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100; percent change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. The tool above runs all three plus discounts with plain-English answers.

How do you calculate percent off a price?

Sale = price × (1 − discount). A $120 jacket at 25% off: $120 × 0.75 = $90, saving $30. Use the Discount tab — the slider previews every discount level live.

How do you find the original price from a sale price?

Original = sale ÷ (1 − discount). On sale for $80 at 20% off: $80 ÷ 0.80 = $100 original. Flip on the "Reverse" toggle above — built for exactly this question.

What is the percent increase from 50 to 75?

50%. (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 50%. Note direction matters: falling from 75 to 50 is only a 33.3% decrease — percentages are not symmetric, which trips up sale and investment math constantly.

What is 20% of $86?

$17.20. Move the decimal left ($8.60 = 10%) and double it — the two-second mental trick behind every restaurant tip.

How do stacked discounts work, like 20% then 10%?

Multiply, do not add: 20% then 10% off = 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72, i.e. 28% off total — not 30%. Run it as two discount passes in the tool.

Is this percentage calculator private?

Completely. All math runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or tracked.

Where else do percentages hide fees?

Restaurant bills (tip on top of tax?), paychecks (what % goes to tax?), and loans (APR vs monthly rate). The tip calculator and paycheck calculator handle those two directly.
